Leo-Johnson, 39, comes to Hillside Meadows after successfully teaching at several local lesson facilities for more than 15 years. Johnson, who has also worked as a licensed horse trainer for more than 20 years, is eager to work at Hillside Meadows.
“Hillside Meadows has a tremendous reputation for offering top-notch riding school programs and amenities, and I look forward to continuing that tradition,” said Leo-Johnson. “This is a top-flight facility with outstanding programs.”
In her role, Leo-Johnson will strive to teach beginners through advanced riders alike in the correct principles for riding. Additionally, she seeks to make the overall equestrian experience more available to families and individuals.
“It’s important to me to make the sport of horseback riding open to everyone, not just those who have the means,” said Leo-Johnson. “We will offer some competitive packages that will allow residents from throughout the region to enjoy the sport.”
Leo-Johnson noted that lessons for beginners cost $200 for four, one-hour sessions. Regular lessons are $45 per hour or four lessons for $160. Additionally, she will hold a two-week summer horsemanship program during the weeks of July 16 and 23 as well as the week of Aug. 13 at the center. Weekly costs for the programs are $325 and last from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
Ron Ernenwein, owner of Hillside Meadows, said he is looking forward to Leo-Johnson’s leadership at the center. “Wendy brings a depth of experience and knowledge of equestrian issues that will serve both the center and her students very well,” said Ernenwein. “We’re thrilled to have her on board.”
The facility is viewed by many as an ideal location for training, complete with multiple trails right from the farm, two oversized sand/rubber flake outdoor rings, a permanent 60-foot round pen, and an expansive lush grass turnout area for horses and their riders in pastures and paddocks. Hillside also boasts a new indoor arena with additional stalls.
Leo-Johnson also has many accolades to her credit. In the spring, she was the coach of Woodgate Equestrian team, composed of Worcester County middle school students who placed eighth out of 20 teams in an Interscholastic Equestrian Association event held at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. Leo-Johnson is most proud that the nine-member Woodgate team took home the tournament’s “Team Spirit Perpetual Trophy.”
“The Perpetual Trophy really embodies the qualities of good sportsmanship and teamwork, which to me is the hallmark of a great riding program,” said Leo-Johnson. “While competition is important, it’s even more important to be a good teammate. And our team had exhibited unmatched sportsmanship throughout the event.”
Parents and students alike look forward to continuing to learn from Leo-Johnson.
Jenifer Bakkala of Northborough, whose 11-year-old daughter Kate takes lessons from Leo-Johnson, lauded the new manager’s teaching style. “Wendy not only focuses on her students’ riding ability, but also focuses on them as people,” said Bakkala. “Kate has gained a lot of confidence in the three years she has worked with Wendy.”
Leo-Johnson and her husband, Charles, live in Holden with their son, Kevin Sweeney, 17.
